Patrick Rowan, MS, CCRP, stands as a testament to the transformative power of education and determination. As an alumnus of The Ohio State University’s online Master of Science in Translational Pharmacology, Patrick’s career trajectory showcases the profound impact of Ohio State’s innovative programs on advancing careers in clinical research.

A Journey of Growth

Patrick joined the Center for Clinical Research Management (CCRM) at The Ohio State University College of Medicine over five years ago. Starting as a research assistant, he quickly demonstrated an aptitude for leadership and innovation, earning promotions to Research Coordinator and now Senior Clinical Research Coordinator. This progression reflects his dedication to mastering the complexities of clinical research and his commitment to professional excellence.

Building a Unique Role in Clinical Research

In his role as a float research professional, Patrick has provided support across 15 different departments and disease groups. His versatility and expertise have made him a key resource on over 30 clinical protocols. This broad exposure, combined with the deeper understanding of team dynamics gained through Ohio State Online, has allowed Patrick to navigate complex research environments more effectively.

Beyond supporting individual studies, Patrick has worked closely with CCRM management to enhance operational processes for floating research staff. His improved understanding of the different priorities and challenges faced by research teams has helped him streamline workflows and improve communication between study teams and leadership, fostering a more efficient and adaptable research environment.

Ohio State Online: The Catalyst for Patrick’s Success

Jen Plahovinsak, Assistant Professor and MS in Translational Pharmacology program director, highlights the program’s ability to prepare graduates for real-world challenges. “Our program is designed to provide students with the scientific knowledge and practical skills they need to excel in clinical research and pharmacology,” she said. “Seeing Patrick thrive and make such a meaningful impact in his field truly exemplifies the success Ohio State Online strives to foster.”

Patrick credits his educational foundation in the Master of Science in Translational Pharmacology program for enhancing his ability to work across teams and anticipate the needs of various partners in the research process. The program’s interdisciplinary approach gave him insight into the different pressures and goals driving clinical trials, helping him build stronger working relationships and improve study outcomes.

According to Patrick, “The online Master of Science in Translational Pharmacology program at Ohio State gave me a broader understanding of the clinical research ecosystem. It helped me see how my role fits into the larger picture and anticipate the challenges faced by investigators, sponsors, and study coordinators alike.”

He further added, “Having the flexibility to study online while continuing to work full-time was a game-changer. The program’s structure allowed me to regularly see connections at work and supplement my work-experience with relevant knowledge we were learning each week.”

Patrick’s expertise and leadership will soon take center stage at the Association of Clinical Research Professionals (ACRP) national convention, Geaux Beyond, held April 24-27 in New Orleans. He will present a session titled “Sustaining Studies and Keeping the Team Afloat in Rough Waters,” where he will share insights into maintaining stability and productivity in clinical research during challenging times. His presentation promises to provide practical strategies and inspiration to other research professionals navigating the complexities of the field.

Inspiring the Next Generation

For those considering a career in clinical research or pharmacology, Patrick emphasizes the importance of understanding the bigger picture. “If you’re serious about advancing in clinical research, it’s not just about knowing your job—it’s about understanding how the whole system functions.
