Are you looking to advance your career in healthcare? The Ohio State University Master of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences with a Specialization in Health-System Pharmacy Administration (MS HSPA) educates and trains pharmacists to conceptualize, plan, coordinate and evaluate pharmaceutical care in organized health care settings. The program is designed to help you advance at your practice site by providing hands-on learning through practice-based projects.
This master in pharmaceutical sciences program is offered in two formats: a hybrid residency program and a 100% online working professional option. The working professional online program consists of mostly asynchronous coursework, allowing for maximum flexibility to accommodate the demanding schedule of working professionals. Most coursework will pair 100% online students with residency students, allowing for cross-learning and networking opportunities. Most students take 2-4 years to complete the program.
Ohio State is a leader in establishing the tradition of Health-System Pharmacy Administration training across the country. Since 1959, this program has had 400+ graduates, many of whom are nationally recognized leaders in pharmacy management. Program graduates include past ASHP presidents, Harvey A.K. Whitney recipients, and more than 50 current directors of pharmacy across the country.

Admission Criteria
The minimum criteria to receive consideration for part-time admission to the MSHSPA without a residency include:
- At least three years of experience in health-system pharmacy practice or have completed an ASHP-accredited PGY-1 residency and currently employed in a health system.
- A 3.0 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) on undergraduate studies and a 3.0 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) on graduate studies
- Submission of CV, statement of interest, transcripts and three letters of reference (with one letter coming from the direct supervisor supporting your enrollment in the program).

The Ohio State University participates in the State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements (SARA).
SARA is a national initiative that increases student access to distance education courses and programs while maintaining compliance with state regulations. Institutions participating in SARA can offer educational opportunities in all 49 SARA member states, the District of Columbia, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico without seeking individual approval in each state.
California is not a SARA member state, however, OSU may offer online courses and programs to students located in California under the California Private Post-Secondary Act of 2009.

- Safe and Effective Medication-Use Systems, which will help you design, implement and manage safe and effective medication-use systems.
- Quality Improvement, which emphasizes the importance of applying the most up-to-date quality methodology to the management and delivery of pharmacy services.
- Management of Human Resources, which prepares you to manage their organization’s workforce.
- Management of Financial Resources, which provides you with an understanding of how to manage financial performance within the context of a health system.
- Use of Technology, which explores how to optimize medication-use systems by leveraging information systems, innovative technology, and automation.
- Advanced Leadership, which focuses on the core component of this program: becoming a strategic, innovative leader.
This course covers selected aspects of financial and managerial accounting as it relates to health systems and pharmacy. Students will be introduced to financial concepts, issues, vocabulary, and tools that are needed by pharmacy leaders in the healthcare industry.
Advanced understanding of information systems, technology and automation systems for health system pharmacy. Explains the advancements that practice technology enhances. Techniques used to manage limitations to electronic information and other technologies.
This course equips students with skills and resources that will enable them to become effective managers and organizational leaders by igniting or fueling students’ passion for leadership development. Using a blend of cases, simulations and interactive guest speakers, this course will delve into concepts of organizational behavior, management dilemmas, diversity, implicit bias, ethical conundrums, and change management.
Apply research and design methodology to resolving health system pharmacy issues.
Describes the components of an effective system for tracking, trending, and reporting adverse drug events (ADE). Understand the techniques used in investigating the causes of events. Integrate medication safety activities as a component of the organization’s safety culture.
Reviews the medication-use system, evidence-based practices in medication-use systems management, operations management and compliance with regulatory and accrediting agencies.
This course serves as a capstone class for students to experience the practical role of a chief pharmacy officer or director of the pharmacy enterprise. During this course, students will have an opportunity to become experts in planning, organizing, executing and analyzing the pharmacy enterprise.
An overview and appraisal of the economic evaluation of health care programs and services applied to health-system pharmacy administration.
This course provides students with an understanding of community-based pharmacy practice, how to effectively engage with community-based practitioners and their sites, and foundational skills necessary to lead and to manage community-based pharmacy practice.
Exposure to the key stakeholders in the pharmaceutical supply chain and factors affecting its integrity. Basic concepts in drug procurement and inventory control.
Provides experience in communication of project proposals and results and current topics. Skills in leading discussions are included, as well as methods to effectively evaluate presentations.
The purpose of this course is to design and complete the required major project focusing on a health system pharmacy issue.
Gives a working knowledge of the most current operations and innovations while focusing on fundamental operations management concepts and techniques.

Lisa Mostafavifar, PharmD, MS, BCPS, BCNSP

Program Director, Master of Science in Health-System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership
As the MS HSPAL Program Director, Dr. Mostafavifar provides strategic and administrative oversight program, teaches multiple core courses, and leads scholarship and collaborative efforts with residency partners. She brings over 15 years of pharmacy experience to her position, including roles in clinical care, health-system operations, and residency program leadership. Dr. Mostafavifar brings a unique perspective as a graduate of the MS HSPAL program, having earned her degree while working full time. She is deeply committed to mentoring future leaders, expanding residency partnerships, and enhancing the student experience. Outside of work, she enjoys exercise, outdoor activities, cheering on the Columbus Crew, supporting her children’s sports, and exploring new restaurants with her husband.

Trisha Jordan, PharmD, MS

As Senior Vice President of Operations at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, Dr. Kaczor closely collaborates with physician chiefs and department leaders as he leads the strategic vision, administration, and safe operations of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine, Homecare, Pharmacy, Poison Control, Interprofessional and Community Education, Supply Chain and Radiology services. His focus is on strategic planning, talent management, practice advancement, and innovating services to improve patient outcomes. Dr. Kaczor is a past president of the Ohio Pharmacists Association (OPA) and serves on the board of STAQ Pharma. He lives in Columbus with his wife and two children.

John Vrontos, Jr., PharmD, MS

Dr. John Vrontos, Jr., is the Pharmacy Operations Manager at Riverside Methodist Hospital, where he coordinates the PGY1/PGY2 Health-System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership Residency Program, leads the Pharmacy Intern Program, and oversees the Controlled Substance Management and Diversion Prevention Program. Dr. Vrontos earned his PharmD and MS in Health-System Pharmacy Administration from The Ohio State University. With over 20 years of leadership experience in adult and pediatric acute care across academic and for-profit health systems, he has served as Corporate Director of Pharmacy Performance Improvement and held roles in health-system supply chain management, medical affairs, and business/compliance/learning services. After a decade of experience in adult hospital pharmacy, Dr. Shelly Ickes Morvay transitioned into her current role as the Medication Safety Pharmacist at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Dr. Morvay holds the ASHP/ISMP Medication Safety Certificated and is a Certified Professional in Patient Safety. She earned her BS and Non-Traditional PharmD from The Ohio State University.

Dr. Max Conrad serves as the Pharmacy Manager for the Mount Carmel Health System, having previously served as Pharmacy Manager at the Kroger Pharmacy in Circleville, Ohio. Margie Neidecker, PhD, MEng, RN, CCRP

Dr. Marjorie “Margie” Neidecker is an assistant professor of Clinical Pharmacy in the Division of Outcomes & Translational Sciences at The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy. Dr. Neidecker was the founding director of the online Master of Clinical Research program and former co-director of the MS in Translational Pharmacology program at The Ohio State University. She has extensive experience in curriculum development, program enhancement, and mentoring students through research projects. Her professional interests include pharmacoeconomics, health outcomes research, clinical research education, and workforce development.

Mitch Dorn, PharmD, MS

Dr. Mitch Dorn oversees daily operations of the central pharmacy, critical care, and OR satellites. Mitch serves on the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Section Advisory Group for Operations and Automation and is involved locally as the secretary for the Central Ohio Society of Health-System Pharmacists executive board. Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with his wife and young children, DIY home projects, and rooting for his hometown Cleveland sports teams.

Brianne Porter, PharmD, MS

Dr. Brianne Porter is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Pharmacy at The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy. Dr. Porter earned her PharmD, completed PGY1 Pharmacy Practice Residency in Ambulatory Care, and graduated from the MS in Health-System Pharmacy Administration program–all from The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy. As a graduate of the program, she is passionate about sharing her experience and mentoring future pharmacy leaders. Her teaching focuses primarily on community-based pharmacy practice. Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with her family, gardening, and quiet early mornings.

Cara D. Hoyt, PharmD
Director of Experiential and Clinical Services at Uptown Pharmacy
Dr. Cara Hoyt is the Director of Experiential and Clinical Services at Uptown Pharmacy in Westerville, Ohio, where she provides direct patient care in medication therapy management and patient-centered dispensing. She leads clinical service development in areas such as immunizations, diabetes management, and hormone therapy. As a certified lifestyle coach through the Diabetes Prevention Program, Dr. Hoyt coordinates diabetes care for Uptown Pharmacy’s AADE accreditation. She led Uptown’s participation in CPESN’s Flip the Pharmacy initiative. With a passion for advancing community pharmacy practice and educating future pharmacists, Dr. Hoyt established a PGY1 community residency site in partnership with The Ohio State University and serves as a preceptor for both residents and APPE students.
