From sonographer tech to aspiring radiology supervisor: Skyler’s story
See how Skyler is applying her online bachelor’s degree in radiologic sciences into her new role as a manager in ultrasound.
For imaging professionals like Skyler, a sonographer at Sacred Heart Hospital in Florida, returning to school was a strategic move to advance her career and prepare for future leadership opportunities in radiology. With nearly seven years of clinical experience and a clear goal to step into a supervisory role, Skyler found the perfect fit in Ohio State’s AS to Bachelor of Science in Radiologic Sciences program.
This fully online bachelor’s degree completion program is designed specifically for medical imaging professionals with associate degrees in radiologic technology, sonography, nuclear medicine or related fields, who want to advance into radiology department management roles.
An online bachelor’s program that aligns with career goals
Skyler’s decision to choose Ohio State was intentional. She explored multiple programs but found that many were geared toward hospital administration, a broader path that didn’t align with her goals. What Skyler was looking for was a program focused specifically on radiology management and leadership — and that’s where Ohio State stood out.
“The curriculum was clearly designed for imaging professionals who are already working and managing careers and families,” she noted. “It wasn’t about becoming a general healthcare administrator. It was about becoming a leader in radiology.”
This distinction is critical. Radiology administration involves managing imaging departments, overseeing equipment purchases, staffing, budgeting, and workflow optimization. In contrast, hospital administration spans multiple departments and requires a broader, less specialized skill set.
Pathway to radiology management and administration roles
As Skyler works toward her Bachelor of Science in Radiologic Sciences, she’s preparing for leadership roles that extend well beyond the imaging room. Two standout careers for imaging professionals with advanced degrees and experience are Radiology Manager and Radiology Administrator. Both offer strong salary potential with compensation influenced by location, experience, and credentials.
Radiology Manager
Radiology Managers oversee imaging departments, manage staff, budgeting, and ensure compliance with safety and quality standards.
According to the Economic Research Institute (ERI):
- Average salary: $121,595
- Average Hourly Rate: $58.46
- Typical education: 100% hold a bachelor’s degree, making it a key credential for entering this role.
Radiology Administrator
Radiology Administrators oversee the operations of imaging departments, managing budgets, compliance, staff, and patient care quality.
According to ERI SalaryExpert:
- Average Salary: $119,250/year
- Typical education: 62% hold a master’s degree, while 38% hold a bachelor’s degree, making undergraduate education an essential foundation for advancement.
Learning that translates to the workplace
Skyler’s coursework has had a direct impact on her day-to-day work. Through budgeting projects and leadership-focused assignments, she’s gained insight into the operational side of imaging services, skills she’s already applying today in her department.
“I’ve learned how to prioritize spending, understand capital budgets, and make decisions based on department needs,” she said. “These aren’t just academic exercises; they’re things I’m using at work.”
And, her manager has taken notice of it. As Skyler progressed through the program, their relationship evolved into a collaborative partnership. Her manager began involving her in budget reviews and strategic planning, even mentoring her for a future supervisory role.
“I’ve shared things I’ve learned in class with my manager,” Skyler explained. “She’s started training me in areas I’ll need to know, and it’s helped me stand out as someone ready for management.”
Online learning that builds connection
One of the most surprising aspects of the program is the sense of community. Despite being fully online, Skyler found herself engaging with classmates across imaging specialties.
“I didn’t expect to meet so many people,” she said. “But I’ve had meaningful conversations and learned things I never would have encountered in my day-to-day work, like the cost and complexity of CT machines.”
This exposure to different modalities has broadened her understanding of the imaging field and helped her see the bigger picture of departmental operations.
Balancing work, family, and education
Skyler’s schedule is demanding, so she appreciates the flexibility of online learning. She starts her day at 4 a.m., works a full shift, and spends evenings studying alongside her daughter. “We do our homework together,” she said. “It’s become part of our routine.”
The program’s structure allows students to take one or two courses at a time, making it manageable for ultrasound techs, and all other imaging professionals juggling work and family responsibilities. “It’s been a great experience,” she said. “I’ve learned so much, and I’ve been able to apply it immediately.”
Supportive faculty and personalized advising
Faculty support has been a highlight of Skyler’s experience. When she experienced a personal loss, her professors were compassionate and flexible, allowing her to take the time she needed without falling behind.
“That made me feel valued,” she said. “It confirmed I made the right choice with Ohio State.”
Her advisor has also been a consistent source of guidance, helping her navigate course selections and stay on track toward graduation.
Skyler encourages other sonographers and imaging technologists to consider the program, especially those with leadership aspirations.
“If your goal is to move into a supervisory or management role in imaging, this is the program for you,” she said. “It’s tailored to our field, and it gives you the tools to lead.”
