Gain the support and resources you need to succeed in a public service career after the military
For many veterans and active military members, transitioning from military service to civilian life can be a complex and challenging journey. Each year, approximately 200,000 service members face this shift, navigating significant changes in areas such as employment, education, finances, housing, health, and relationships. According to Pew Research from 2019, nearly half of post-9/11 veterans report difficulty adjusting to civilian life. Additionally, another study in 2023 reported that 33% of military veterans struggle to find a job. These challenges can be attributed to several factors, including securing employment that aligns with their skills, adapting to a less structured environment, and managing physical or mental health issues related to their service.
Understanding these common challenges is crucial for developing effective support systems. Initiatives like Service to Service through the John Glenn College of Public Affairs at The Ohio State University are designed to address these specific needs, offering tailored resources to assist veterans in navigating the complexities of transitioning to civilian careers, particularly in public service as they further their education to position themselves competitively in the job market.
